Near Houston now. Lake Conroe. Went out for catfish and other country dishes last night at Vernon’s Kuntry Katfish. Everything was pretty good. Catfish, chicken, fried green tomatoes, okra, banana pudding, pecan cobbler. There’s a big difference between food and people in western Texas compared to San Antonio, Austin, and Houston. The waitress kept calling me ma’am, but in a very sweet, polite way that didn’t make me cringe.
This Thousand Trails is nice. Great pool area, new bathrooms, nice mini golf, big buildings, on a big lake. It is surrounded by nice houses.
Austin was nice, even though I didn’t get to see Liz. We ate out a few times, walked down South Congress, took a tour at the state capitol, learned a lot about Texas, and went to Round Rock Donuts, the first donut place I remember seeing on Food TV.
Houston is a big city with so much to do, I’m not sure where to start. There’s the Space Center, but it’s a bit pricey. It would be an all-day thing. Maybe we’ll just do that and stick around TT the rest of the time.
I started using a budget app to help me keep track of our spending. I gave us $700/week. That should get us through October with a few thousand dollars left. I’m not sure where we’ll be or what we’ll do in October, though. I think we’re open to the idea of workamping.
